Acquired Brain Injury Care and Support

Our Acquired Brain Injury Care and Support Service (ABICS) is a service designed to utilise the experience of Headway Shropshire in the support of brain injured clients by offering a high quality care and support service in their own homes.

We can offer you the support to live independantly in your own home with many of our support packages reducing over time as our clients gain in confidence and ability to support themselves. We differ from other support agencies because we not only specialise in Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) but we also support rather than 'do for' our clients.

Examples of the types of support we offer are:

Support to go food shopping

We dont take our clients to the shops and do their shopping for them. We encourage our clients to come up with coping strategies, such as writing a shopping list before we leave which aids memory loss and then support them to buy the things they need and want.

Support with cooking

We can come to your home and help you plan your meals and support you to make them. We will help you to look ahead and plan what needs to be eaten, again, using various different coping strategies, we aim to enable you to plan and cook your meals on your own. We also have a Occupational Therapist and links with other agencies who may be able to help make any alterations you need to your kitchen to help you become more independant.

Links with other agencies

Headway Shropshire has been operating for over 20 years. In this time we have forged fantastic links with other agencies and regularly refer our clients on to these agencies for help in many areas. We can put you in touch with people who can help you with anger and aggression, problems washing and batheing, substance abuse, family problems, benefit advice and much more. We will support you to gain the advice and information you need.

A plan for the future

We often meet our clients and their families in the early years since their ABI. A common issue is how their lives and those of their families have altered and the future may not be what they planned it to be. We can help you and your family to look at these changes and look to the future in a more positive way and help you to achieve your goals.

Activities in the community

Many of our clients lack the confidence to go out like they used to or would like to go out but feel that they can't. Our support workers have helped people do the things they have wanted to such as going clothes shopping, going to the gym, popping to the community centre for a coffee and a chat with friends, starting yoga classes, even becoming volunteers at the local dogs home.

Hope

Our qualified professional staff are trained to find out what you want and need. We can offer our clients and their families hope, be it by taking some of the responsibility off stressed family members or hope for the future and that things will become easier.

All of our clients have a personalised support package which has your own goals and needs within it. We are as flexible as possible to meet the needs of our clients and operate a 24 hour on call telephone line to meet their needs. If your needs change so too does your support plan and we will work with you until you feel you are able to live independantly without us.
