Frequently Asked Questions
How are staff trained to support people with brain injuries?
You do not need to arrive at Headway already knowing everything about brain injury. We provide role-specific induction, mandatory training and ongoing development to help staff build the knowledge and confidence they need.
For our Specialist One-to-one Community Support Workers, this includes areas like care, medication administration, moving and handling and seizure training, alongside understanding acquired brain injury, communication, safeguarding, dignity, independence and person-centred support.
Training continues after induction through supervision, competency checks, refresher training and ongoing learning. What matters most is having the right values, attitude and willingness to keep developing.
What’s the difference between the Headway Hub and the Community Team?
The Headway Hub team works mainly from Headway House in Shrewsbury, supporting the day-to-day delivery of activities, groups, social connection and structured support for people attending the Hub.
Our Community Team provides specialist one-to-one support and two-to-one support. They work with people in their own homes and local communities, supporting with areas like personal care, medication, appointments, routines, independence and personal goals.
The teams have different day-to-day roles, but are part of the same wider Headway service and work closely together. Some staff may also work across both areas depending on their role and experience.
How does the team ensure high-quality care?
Quality is everyone’s responsibility at Headway. Staff work to agreed care plans, policies and procedures, and are supported through induction, training, supervision, competency checks, care-plan reviews, audits and regular monitoring.
We also have named leads and champions across areas like safeguarding, medication, dignity, infection control, health and safety and information governance. This helps make responsibilities clear and gives staff people they can go to for guidance and support.
Just as importantly, we expect staff to speak up, share ideas and keep looking for ways we can improve.
What makes the Headway Shropshire team unique?
Our team combines specialist brain injury support with a strong community feel.
We understand that life after brain injury is about much more than completing care tasks – we help people rebuild life after brain injury. Our staff support people with independence, confidence, relationships, routines, interests, community life and the goals that matter to them personally.
Because Headway Shropshire provides both the Headway Hub and specialist community support, our team can work across different parts of a person’s life rather than seeing support in isolation.
We also value people who are curious, practical, compassionate and willing to think differently. Brain injury affects everyone differently, so our staff need to be able to adapt, build genuine relationships and see the person rather than just the diagnosis.
