Frequently Asked Questions
Can Headway Shropshire help me understand how support might be funded?
Yes. We can explain the main routes that commonly fund our services and help you understand who you may need to speak to next. We cannot guarantee that a council, NHS body or other funder will approve funding.
Can Adult Social Care fund Headway Shropshire support?
Potentially. A local authority may fund eligible care and support through an agreed Personal Budget or Direct Payment. The council decides eligibility and any financial contribution through its own assessment process.
What are Direct Payments and Personal Budgets?
They are ways eligible social care funding can be used to arrange support. Depending on the local arrangement, this may allow someone to purchase agreed support from a provider such as Headway Shropshire.
What is NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)?
NHS Continuing Healthcare is a package of care for some adults whose assessed needs are primarily health-related. It is assessed through the NHS process and is separate from local-authority social care funding.
Can I fund support privately?
Yes. Private payment can be used for the Headway Hub or ABICS. The usual assessment, suitability and pre-start arrangements still apply.
Can a case manager, deputy or personal injury settlement fund support?
Yes. We work with case managers, deputies, solicitors and other professional funding arrangements and can provide service information, assessment findings and costings to support the decision-making process.
Will Headway Shropshire apply for benefits for me?
We can provide information and signposting, but benefits are separate from Headway Shropshire service funding. For individual benefits advice, we will point you towards current official guidance or an appropriate independent advice service.
What if I have no idea where to start with funding?
Get in touch anyway. We can help identify whether a social worker, health professional, case manager or another funding route is already involved and explain the likely next step. If no route is in place, we can signpost you to the right starting point.
Do I need funding confirmed before Headway Shropshire will speak to me?
No. We can speak to you before funding is confirmed.
It’s important to discuss funding early because public funding can sometimes take a fair amount of time to arrange. Having the right information and starting those conversations as early as possible can help avoid unnecessary delays later in the referral process.
Can Headway Shropshire guarantee funding will be approved?
No. Funding decisions are made by the relevant council, NHS body, professional decision-maker or private payer. We can explain our service, provide information and work with the people involved, but we cannot promise an external funding decision.
Is there any emergency financial support available after a brain injury?
Headway UK has an Emergency Fund which can provide grants of up to £300 to help eligible families and friends with essential travel and accommodation costs while someone is receiving hospital treatment following a brain injury.
The fund is intended to help families stay close to their loved one during the acute stage of brain injury or early inpatient rehabilitation. Eligibility criteria and time limits apply.
If the Emergency Fund cannot help with your particular situation, Headway UK’s Helpline can also help identify and signpost you towards other possible sources of financial support.
