We’re Headway Shropshire, helping people in Shropshire, Telford and beyond rebuild life after brain injury. For nearly forty years now, we’ve worked to spread awareness of acquired brain injury and help people who are affected to enjoy their life as fully as possible. This is our story.
1989
Headway Shropshire started in 1989 from small beginnings. Two Occupational Therapists and a Physiotherapist saw there was a lack of support for people with an acquired brain injury – and decided to do something about it.
1992
Their very first meeting was in the Railway Club in Shrewsbury, where the group stayed until 1992 when The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital kindly offered an area on the south side of the hospital to use.
1993
In 1993 Headway Shropshire finally officially opened its doors. At first, we were open two days a week and we grew quickly with clients, staff and volunteers.
2002
In 2002 we moved to Headway House on the Oxon Business Park in Shrewsbury, having started plans to fund our very own building way back in 1999. The hard work paid off, and our building has seen the confidence and independence of many local people with acquired brain injury grow since then.
2026
This year saw the biggest ever revamp of our beloved HQ. Now known as the Headway Hub, in 2026 we renovated the building and had it fully redesigned to be more accessible – and beautiful – than ever. You can read more about our Hub here.
The story continues
Today we have a team of brilliant staff, a board of Trustees with a wealth of skills and knowledge, and an army of willing and wonderful volunteers. We now open our doors three days a week to support people with acquired brain injury, as well as providing a one-to-one care and support service for the home.
Although affiliated to the national charity Headway UK, Headway Shropshire is a separate and independent charity. We rely entirely on our own funded contracts, grants and income generated through donations, and fundraising.
