Frequently Asked Questions
What if Headway Shropshire is not the right service for me?
We will still try to help you find the next step. We can discuss other Headway Shropshire options or, where appropriate, help point you towards another service or support route.
Can Headway Shropshire support me or my family member?
Yes. We support adults living with acquired brain injury through the Headway Hub, ABICS one-to-one community support and peer support. You do not need to know which service is right before contacting us.
Does it matter how long ago the brain injury happened?
No. Your brain injury may be recent or may have happened many years ago. If you need support now, it is still worth getting in touch.
Do you support people after stroke?
Yes. Stroke is an acquired brain injury, and we can support people living with its effects where our services are suitable for their needs.

Do you support people at home as well as at Headway House?
Yes. ABICS provides one-to-one support in your own home and community, while the Headway Hub offers specialist support at Headway House. Some people may use both.
What is the difference between the Headway Hub and ABICS?
The Headway Hub provides structured specialist support, activities and social connection at Headway House. ABICS provides one-to-one care and support in your home and community. We can help you work out which option, or combination, is right for you.
What happens after I contact you?
We will talk with you about what has happened, what matters to you, what support may help and how it could be funded. We will then explain the next step, which may include an assessment.
Do I need a formal referral?
No. You can contact us yourself, a family member or carer can get in touch, or a professional can make a referral.
How are Headway Shropshire services funded?
Funding may come through Adult Social Care, Direct Payments, Personal Budgets, NHS routes, case management or deputyship arrangements, personal injury funding or private payment. We can help explain the likely options.
Can I pay privately?
Yes. Private payment can be used for the Headway Hub or ABICS, subject to the usual assessment and suitability process.
Can I visit the Headway Hub?
Yes. Once we have completed the appropriate assessment and confirmed likely suitability, we can arrange a taster day so you can experience the Headway Hub before deciding whether to proceed.
Do you provide free support?
Yes. Headway Shropshire runs Neuro Wellbeing support groups in Shrewsbury and Telford, giving people affected by acquired brain injury a chance to connect with others who understand.
