From organising fundraising quiz nights in his own time to helping secure community donations, Martin Jones is one of those people who quietly keeps finding ways to give a little more. Now, that contribution has also been recognised by his colleagues at Headway Shropshire.

For Martin, supporting Headway Shropshire does not stop when his shift ends.

Alongside his work with the people we support, Martin has been using his own time to bring people together and raise money for Headway through a series of community quiz nights – with two already held and more planned for the future.

The first took place at The Bird in Hand in Shrewsbury in November 2025. It was a proper community night: teams gathered for the quiz, there was live music, Martin even treated everyone to chip butties, and Headway received a £500 cheque from The Royal Society of St George Shropshire Branch alongside a further £146.50 raised in cash on the night.

A busy charity quiz night with groups of people seated around tables in a pub.

Martin followed that with another quiz at The Red Lion in Battlefield in January 2026. Once again, staff, friends and supporters came together for Headway, raising around £280 on the night – and the evening even included fellow team member Mickey agreeing to have his head shaved in support of the charity.

But Martin’s fundraising has not been limited to quiz nights. Earlier this year, he also helped bring a £400 donation to Headway Shropshire from the Rotary Club of Shrewsbury Severn – another example of what can happen when people talk about Headway, build relationships in their communities and simply ask others to get involved.

That willingness to go above and beyond is something Martin’s colleagues notice in his day-to-day work too. In October, he was named Headway Shropshire’s Employee of the Quarter for Q3 2026. The team highlighted his reliability and proactive approach, the care he takes to make sure client documentation and procedures are in place, his willingness to support others and, importantly, the positive attitude and sense of humour he brings with him.

For us, Martin’s story captures something important about Headway Shropshire. A charity is not built by one person or one big fundraising campaign. It grows because people care enough to do the extra things – organise the quiz, make the phone call, bring people together, ask a local organisation for support or give up an evening because they believe in what the charity is trying to achieve.

And Martin is not finished yet. More quiz nights are planned, and future dates will be added to our Events page as they are confirmed. So if you fancy getting a team together, testing your general knowledge and supporting people affected by brain injury at the same time – watch this space.

Want to get involved? Keep an eye on our Events page for Martin’s next quiz night, or contact Headway Shropshire if you would like to fundraise, organise an event or support our work in your own way.
