For many of us, a holiday is something to look forward to without having to think too much about the practicalities. After a brain injury, though, time away can sometimes feel more complicated – especially when someone needs support with everyday routines, mobility, medication, personal care or simply having the confidence to be somewhere unfamiliar.
This year, Headway Shropshire began facilitating supported holidays for clients, helping people enjoy time away in a way that is planned around their individual needs rather than expecting them to fit around a standard package.
One of those trips was a stay at Ty Glyn Davis Trust Holiday Centre, near Lampeter. With support in place throughout the break, one of our clients was able to enjoy a real change of scenery – with coastal days out, meals, music, relaxed evenings and, importantly, time to rest when needed.
There was a day in Aberystwyth spent sitting by the seafront, taking in the views and listening to live music, followed later by a curry night. Another trip took in New Quay, where fish and chips and ice cream overlooking the harbour were firmly on the agenda. There was also time at Aberaeron beach, followed by a meal locally.
Back at the holiday centre, evenings could be quieter: movie nights, time to unwind and space to recover from the day’s activities. That balance mattered. The aim was not to fill every minute, but to make the holiday enjoyable, manageable and shaped around the person taking it.
For us, that is what good support should look like. It is not only about helping with care tasks. It is about enabling people to keep doing the things that make life feel like their own – whether that is going out for dinner, spending time by the sea, exploring somewhere new or simply having a few days away from the usual routine.
Supported holidays are something we want to develop much further during 2027. Rather than offering one fixed type of break, our intention is to work with people around their own ideas, interests and support needs, and then look at what a safe, realistic and enjoyable package could look like for them.
Because sometimes progress is not about a clinical milestone. Sometimes it is fish and chips by the harbour, live music on the seafront, a film at the end of the day – and having the right support around you to make those moments possible.
